This issue contains
short reports on human rights in Bangladesh and Japan. For Indonesia and East
Timor, it reports on restrictions of the freedom of association and expression,
arbitrary arrests and detentions, disappearances and extra-judicial executions,
and extermination of the Timorese people. For South Korea, it reports on
student and labour movements, the plight of the urban poor, political
prisoners, and restrictions of the freedom of expression. Regarding Malaysia,
it contains reports on arbitrary arrests and detentions, preventive detention,
the erosion of civil liberties, and the independence of the judiciary. Concerning
the Philippines, it covers military strategy, human rights protections,
violations of fundamental rights, arbitrary arrests and detention, and
extra-judicial killings and massacres. Similar reports are provided for
Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Taiwan. Each report concludes on action
recommendations.
