This issue opens with a
note from the editor, briefly relating his trip to China in June and the work
of the CCP over the summer. It features comments by Michael Stainton on Helen
Craw’s letter regarding the “Missionaries in China” report, defending the article
as reflective of what is taught in China but also encouraging readers to
continue writing responses. It also includes an extensive section of local and
international news and activities surrounding China, and provides information
on obtaining audio-visual materials on China. It also features a report by Ray
Whitehead titled “Problems and Progress in People’s China”, which recounts the
progress of the Chinese Church observed during his June 1977 visit to China and
notes areas where improvements could still be made. It also includes the report
“Gang of Four” by Phil Biggin, describing the conspiratorial coalition that
tried to seize power after Mao’s death.
